The Parliament House of South Australia sits on North Terrace with a grand colonnade of Corinthian columns carved from local Kapunda marble. Construction stalled for decades because the colony ran out of money, leaving only the western wing finished for fifteen years. When the main building finally opened in eighteen eighty-nine, the government opted to leave the dome off the original design to save costs. It stayed flat-topped until a private donor finally funded the completion of the dome in nineteen thirty-nine.
