Government House stands behind a high stone wall, recognizable by the tall, dark Norfolk Island pines that poke above the greenery along North Terrace. It serves as the official residence of the Governor of South Australia. Built in eighteen forty, the house originally consisted of a simple cottage constructed of local limestone. When the royal visitor Prince Alfred arrived in eighteen sixty-seven, he complained about the drafty, unfinished state of the rooms, prompting immediate renovations that expanded the building into its current footprint.
