Mitchell Building

The Mitchell Building displays a heavy, rusticated sandstone facade, punctuated by a central tower that serves as the main entrance to the University of Adelaide. Completed in eighteen eighty-two, it provided the university its first permanent home. During construction, the project stalled when the original contractors went bankrupt, leaving the structure open to the elements for months. Work resumed under a new builder, yet the building remained incomplete for decades, missing the originally planned ornate carvings on its upper levels.
