Bonython Hall

Bonython Hall is defined by the massive Gothic tower that rises above the North Terrace skyline, anchored by four heavy stone buttresses. It was built during the Great Depression with a donation from Sir Langdon Bonython, a newspaper magnate who insisted the university get a formal hall for graduation ceremonies. Before this hall existed, students received their degrees in a drafty, temporary tent. When the building opened in nineteen thirty-six, the first students inside were reportedly relieved to finally have solid stone walls.
