The National War Memorial on North Terrace features a prominent bronze winged figure of a youth standing atop a tall, tapered pylon. Dedicated in nineteen thirty-one, the memorial commemorates the South Australians who served in the First World War. While the monument commemorates the collective sacrifice, the inner chamber tells a quieter story. It houses a single, hand-written roll of honor, where the pages are turned every morning at ten o'clock to ensure every name is visible to the public at least once annually.
