The Grenfell Centre stands out on Grenfell Street with its distinct vertical ribbing and deep, recessed windows. Completed in nineteen seventy-three, it was the first building in Adelaide to reach one hundred meters in height. The tower reflects a shift in city planning when planners began allowing skyscrapers to reshape the skyline. During its construction, ironworkers famously threatened to walk off the job unless the developers installed a more modern elevator system for the upper floors, and they got their way.
