The Kong Chew Society building features a distinctive, ornate facade with colorful traditional Chinese motifs tucked into a row of older Victorian terrace houses. Established in eighteen eighty-one, this society served as a vital support hub for immigrants arriving from the Kong Chew district of Guangdong province. When gold rush arrivals faced extreme isolation and prejudice, they gathered here to share letters from home, settle community disputes, and maintain ancestral rites. Today, the society still operates from these same rooms.
