The Palace Hotel sits at the corner of Saint Georges Terrace and William Street, easily identified by its ornate, cream-colored limestone facade and the sweeping iron lacework balconies that wrap around the building. Built in eighteen ninety-five, the hotel served the influx of wealthy prospectors and businessmen arriving during the Western Australian gold rush. John Winthrop Hackett, a prominent local newspaper proprietor, commissioned the building to house high-end travelers, and for decades, it remained the premier address for society events in Perth.
