The Plaza Arcade is defined by its narrow, glass-roofed passage connecting Hay Street Mall to Murray Street. Built in nineteen thirty-nine, the arcade replaced the old Theatre Royal. When the builders cleared the site, they moved the heavy limestone facade of the original theatre to the new entrance. Architect William Leighton designed the interior with tiered, cream-colored plaster walls and rounded corners. It remains the oldest functioning arcade in Perth, still holding the original streamlined, art deco lines from its opening year.
