The Supreme Court Gardens feature a massive, sprawling Moreton Bay fig tree that dwarfs the surrounding lawns. This green space occupies land reclaimed from the Swan River in the late nineteenth century to provide a formal setting for the adjacent colonial courthouse. In eighteen ninety-six, the city held a competition for a decorative fountain to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The winning design arrived in pieces from England, yet stood unfinished for years because the city lacked the money to install it.
