Jesuit Stairs

The Jesuit Stairs rise in a dramatic, wide stone sweep from the Gundulic Square toward the baroque facade of Saint Ignatius Church. Designed by Pietro Passalacqua in seventeen thirty-eight, these stairs mimic the famous Spanish Steps in Rome. During the Siege of Dubrovnik in nineteen ninety-one, a mortar shell struck the middle of the flight, leaving jagged scars on the stone that remain visible today. Locals still recount how residents cleared the debris even while the city was under active fire.
