Onofrio's Large Fountain

The sixteen-sided stone basin at the Pile Gate served as the main water source for Dubrovnik after Onofrio della Cava completed the aqueduct system in fourteen forty-four. Carved stone masks, or mascarons, sit above each side, and water still spills from them into the pool today. The sculptor Petar Martinov designed these faces, though an earthquake in sixteen sixty-seven damaged the upper structure, leaving only the lower basin and the masks in their original form from the fifteenth century.
