Lazareti

The ten connected stone buildings of the Lazareti complex stand in a straight line, separated by internal courtyards that once served as a barrier against the plague. Built during the seventeenth century, the site acted as a quarantine station for merchants and goods arriving in the Republic of Ragusa. Travelers spent forty days in isolation here before gaining entry into the city. By enforcing this rule, the republic protected its citizens from the frequent outbreaks that devastated other Mediterranean trade ports at the time.
