The Rector's Palace is the low, stone building with the arched loggia supported by carved, floral-topped columns. For centuries, the elected head of the Republic of Dubrovnik, the Rector, lived inside for his month-long term. He stayed behind these walls to prevent corruption, unable to leave except for state business. When the powder magazine in the nearby tower exploded in sixteen sixty-seven, the blast ripped through the palace and collapsed the central atrium. The Rector barely escaped by crawling through the ruins.
