Fort Revelin

Fort Revelin sits as a rugged stone block guarding the eastern gate of Dubrovnik, easily identified by the wide, defensive moat that separates its jagged walls from the main city ramparts. Built in the middle of the sixteenth century, the fortress protected the Republic of Ragusa from Ottoman incursions. When a massive earthquake leveled the city in sixteen sixty-seven, the strong stone vaulting of Revelin served as a secure shelter for the government and saved the city treasury from destruction.
