The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary sits at the heart of Dubrovnik with a massive, pale green dome that dominates the city skyline. Its current Baroque facade rose from the wreckage of the devastating earthquake of sixteen sixty-seven. Legend says King Richard the Lionheart funded the original twelfth-century Romanesque structure after surviving a shipwreck nearby. When the tremors leveled that medieval church, the city spent decades rebuilding this ornate version, eventually filling its treasury with Titian’s famous altar painting of the Assumption.
