Pile Gate

Two arched stone bridges span the moat at Pile Gate, connecting the city to the land beyond. The inner bridge, built in fifteen thirty-seven, features a statue of Saint Blaise, the city's patron saint, tucked into a central niche. For centuries, this was the primary entrance to Dubrovnik. Every evening, the drawbridge was raised, and the key was handed over to the Rector for safekeeping, ensuring the city remained locked and protected until the morning light returned.
