Luka Tower

The Luka Tower is a stout stone cylinder punctuating the harbor wall of the old city of Dubrovnik. Built in the late fifteenth century, the tower served as the eastern gate to the harbor, controlling the movement of goods and sailors between the ships and the town. During the plague years of the sixteenth century, authorities used the tower as a mandatory quarantine point for arriving merchants. They remained isolated inside for forty days before they could enter the city walls with their cargo.
