Dubrovnik West Harbour

The two stone breakwaters of the West Harbour, known as Porporela and Kase, create a narrow, rocky passage sheltered by the massive fortress walls of Lovrijenac and Bokar. This small bay served as the primary port for Dubrovnik for centuries, protecting the republic’s trade galleys from the rough open sea. In fifteen seventy-one, the Senate ordered the construction of the Kase breakwater to break the force of the waves, using sunken wooden crates filled with stones to anchor the harbor’s defense.
