The Sponza Palace houses the Memorial Room of the Dubrovnik Defenders. High stone arches define the ground floor, supporting a delicate loggia above. This building survived the sixteen sixty-seven earthquake, keeping its late gothic and renaissance carvings intact. During the nineteen ninety-one siege, soldiers gathered here to coordinate the defense of the city. Today, the walls display portraits of the men who died during the shelling. Each photograph hangs exactly where the commanders once stood to plan their next move.
