The Dominican Monastery sits right against the northern edge of the old city walls, distinguished by its high, sturdy stone facade and the single, sharp gothic arch of its main doorway. Inside, the cloister feels like a world apart from the noise of the streets. In fifteen thirty-six, a massive explosion at a gunpowder store nearby blew the roof off the church and shattered the precious paintings inside, forcing the monks to spend decades rebuilding what the city had carelessly destroyed.
