Porte de Bourgogne

The Porte de Bourgogne stands at the end of the Pont de Pierre with heavy limestone arches and rusticated masonry that mark the historic entrance to the city. Built between seventeen fifty and seventeen fifty-five, the gate celebrated the birth of the Duke of Burgundy, the grandson of Louis the Fifteenth. It replaced a medieval gateway, signaling Bordeaux’s modernization during the Enlightenment. The gate remains anchored in place, caught between the Garonne riverfront and the sprawling city center.
