The Place de la Bourse features a wide, horseshoe-shaped facade of cream-colored limestone that mirrors itself perfectly across the central fountain. King Louis the Fifteenth commissioned this plaza in the seventeen twenties to open up the medieval city to the Garonne River. Gabriel the Elder designed the buildings to serve as the royal customs house and the stock exchange. During the French Revolution, the bronze equestrian statue of the King standing in the center was torn down and melted into cannons.
