Temple des Chartrons

The Temple des Chartrons displays a tall, Neoclassical portico with four massive Corinthian columns that define its street-facing front. Built between eighteen thirty-two and eighteen thirty-five for the city’s prosperous Protestant community, the temple replaced a smaller place of worship. Wealthy wine merchants from northern Europe, who drove the local economy, financed the project to establish their religious identity within the Catholic stronghold of Bordeaux. The church hosted their services until the congregation moved out in the late twentieth century.
