Rue de la Devise is a narrow, medieval-style street in the heart of Bordeaux, identifiable by the tall, limestone-faced buildings that crowd the path. During the eighteenth century, the street served as a bustling commercial artery, housing merchants who traded in colonial goods like sugar and coffee. A fire in seventeen twenty-four forced the city to widen and regulate the surrounding lanes, but this street kept its original, cramped footprint. It exists today as a rare, surviving fragment of the old city's tighter, irregular geography.
