Allées de Tourny

The Allées de Tourny feature two symmetrical rows of white limestone buildings with ornate wrought-iron balconies that frame a wide, tree-lined promenade. Designed in the middle of the eighteenth century by Louis de Tourny, the king’s intendant, these buildings replaced the city’s medieval walls. Tourny wanted to transform Bordeaux into a modern, open city. He convinced wealthy merchants to build their private residences here, creating a grand entrance to the city center that remains its most recognizable architectural axis today.
