The massive bench you see before you is a work of art titled Banc Public by the French artist Lilian Bourgeat. It is a deliberate, two-and-a-half-times-scale enlargement of a standard Parisian street bench, crafted from wood and steel to mimic the familiar design of city furniture. By inflating the proportions of an everyday object, the artist invites you to reconsider the scale of the towering skyscrapers and expansive concrete esplanade that define this business district. Originally commissioned for an outdoor art exhibition celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of La Défense in two thousand eighteen, the sculpture was so popular with visitors and local employees that it became a permanent fixture. It acts as an interactive bridge between the monumental, often overwhelming architecture of the area and the human experience.
