The Gaumont-Palace is marked by a massive, curved concrete facade that once stretched along the Place de Clichy, topped by a spire that acted as a beacon for cinema goers. Opened in nineteen eleven as the Hippodrome, it became the largest movie theater in the world by the thirties, holding six thousand people. Leon Gaumont filled the cavernous hall with sound and color before most other screens could manage it. A furniture store occupies the site today, hiding the ghosts of the auditorium.
