Regard de la Lanterne Garden

The Regard de la Lanterne stands as a small stone rotunda topped with a sharp, pointed roof, marking the entrance to a network of underground water tunnels. Built in the early seventeenth century, this structure allowed engineers to access and clean the Belleville aqueduct that once supplied water to the city. During the reign of Louis the Thirteenth, people gathered here to watch the annual cleansing of the pipes, turning a municipal maintenance task into a curious neighborhood spectacle.
