Square Dode de la Brunerie

This square is named for Guillaume Dode de la Brunerie, a nineteenth-century Marshal of France who is remembered for his monumental contribution to the city defenses. He was the first person to rise through the ranks of the military engineering corps to reach the rank of Marshal since the time of the legendary military architect Vauban. His most significant achievement was taking command of the extensive fortifications of Paris in eighteen-forty and successfully overseeing their completion. You can also find his name carved onto the south pillar of the Arc de Triomphe, commemorating his lifelong career as an engineer and soldier.
