Church of Saint-Francois de Sales, Paris

The Church of Saint-Francois de Sales wears a distinctive red brick facade decorated with stone, contrasting sharply with the limestone gray common to its neighborhood. Built in the nineteen tens, it stands on land that once served as a private garden. Architects Lucien Magne and Joseph Marrast designed it to hold three thousand worshippers. During the Second World War, a German shell struck the building, leaving a scar that workers repaired, though the brickwork still reveals the subtle difference in the masonry today.
