Abyssinia Square is a rectangular expanse paved with stone that sits in the heart of the Monastiraki district. It hosts the city's most famous flea market, where antiques, rusted tools, and stacks of old records spill onto the sidewalk every Sunday. The square earns its name from a visit by the Emperor of Abyssinia, Haile Selassie, in the nineteen fifties. Merchants traded here long before the royal visit, turning the space into a permanent clearinghouse for the city's discarded past.
