Dexameni Square sits at the end of a steep climb in Kolonaki, marked by a low stone wall and a dense canopy of shade trees that stay cool when the rest of Athens swelters. Beneath the surface lies a massive Roman cistern, built by Emperor Hadrian to store water brought from the mountains. In the nineteen twenties, writers like Nikos Kazantzakis and Odysseas Elytis claimed the tables here as their own, turning this patch of shade into the intellectual center of the city.
