Platia Filikis Eterias, known to most as Kolonaki Square, centers on a small, sloped garden tucked between high-end apartment buildings. It takes its name from the Society of Friends, a secret nineteenth-century organization that plotted the Greek War of Independence. While modern crowds now cluster at the outdoor cafes, the square served as a quiet meeting ground for those revolutionaries. In eighteen twenty-one, the members gathered in similar clandestine spaces across the city to organize their uprising against Ottoman rule.
