Bell tower of the cathedral

The campanile attached to the Amalfi Cathedral features a crown of colorful majolica tiles arranged in geometric patterns that glow against the mountain backdrop. It serves as a vertical marker for the town, built in the late twelfth century to display the wealth of the maritime republic. While the tower reflects Arab-Norman architecture, it also houses a heavy bell that legend says once fell through the roof of a nearby house, leaving the residents inside entirely unharmed despite the massive weight of the bronze.
