Porta della Marina

The Porta della Marina stands as a thick stone archway topped by a small, colorful majolica tiled image of Saint Andrew. It serves as the primary entrance from the harbor into the heart of Amalfi. In the Middle Ages, this gate protected the maritime republic from invaders, but it also functioned as a customs house where merchants paid duties on silk and spices. A tax collector sat beneath these stones, weighing cargo as it moved from the ships into the narrow city streets.
