Cathedral of St Andrew Apostle

The Cathedral of Saint Andrew sits at the top of a steep, sixty-two step staircase, its facade glowing with gold-leaf mosaics that depict Christ and the apostles. Inside this ninth-century structure lies the crypt of Saint Andrew, whose remains were brought here from Constantinople in twelve oh six by Cardinal Pietro Capuano. When the relics arrived, the city became a major pilgrimage site, securing Amalfi’s status as a powerful maritime republic that could rival Venice for holy influence and prestige on the Mediterranean stage.
