Via Corte del Bajulo

The Via Corte del Bajulo is a narrow, covered passageway that tunnels directly through the base of a dense cluster of medieval stone houses. Its vaulted ceiling creates a tunnel effect that blocks out the Amalfi sun even at midday. Local lore identifies the name as a reference to the baiulo, a medieval magistrate who administered justice here on behalf of the powerful dukes of Amalfi. It remains a shortcut for residents, who still navigate the same uneven stone steps used by the magistrate’s guards.
