Piazza dei Dogi

The Piazza dei Dogi opens up as a flat, paved space sitting right at the edge of the harbor. It serves as the historic maritime heart of Amalfi. Back in the eleventh century, the powerful Republic of Amalfi conducted its business here, sending fleets across the Mediterranean to trade silk and spices. A bronze bust of Flavio Gioia watches over the square today. Sailors once credited him with perfecting the mariner's compass right here on these docks, changing how ships navigated the open sea forever.
