Collegiate Church of Saint Mary Magdalene 'Penitente'

The Collegiate Church of Saint Mary Magdalene features a bright, majolica-tiled cupola that glows against the sheer rock face of Mount Civita. Built in twelve seventy-four on the site of a medieval castle, the church serves as the primary sanctuary for the people of Atrani. Sailors once credited Saint Mary Magdalene with saving the town from a brutal mercenary attack in the sixteenth century. They celebrated their survival by funding the distinctive yellow and green dome that sailors still use for navigation today.
