The limestone cliff rising above the Amalfi coast supports a cluster of stone buildings topped by a weathered bell tower and a terracotta roof. This is a thirteenth-century Capuchin monastery, converted from its original purpose as a convent into a hotel in the eighteen hundreds. When the monks left, travelers like Richard Wagner and Henrik Ibsen occupied their austere cells, seeking the isolation of the high ridge. The stone cloister remains largely unchanged, enclosed by the same arched walkways the friars once used.
