Souq Cherratine is defined by the sharp, earthy scent of cured animal hides and the rhythmic tapping of metal tools against leather. This narrow passage houses the city’s traditional leatherworkers, who have occupied these stalls for generations to turn raw skins into bags, belts, and saddles. In the middle of the eighteenth century, the guild secured this specific stretch of the medina to regulate their trade. One leatherworker still uses a rusted iron stamp passed down from his great-grandfather to mark every finished piece.
