Fuente de Mouassine

The Mouassine Fountain is distinguished by its three arched bays carved from dark cedar wood and delicate stucco, set deep into the wall of the mosque complex. Commissioned by the Saadian Sultan Moulay Abdallah al-Ghalib in the sixteenth century, it serves as the largest and most elaborate public water source in the city. The fountain functioned as the heart of local life, where thirsty travelers and neighborhood residents gathered to draw water from the subterranean channels flowing beneath the streets of the Medina.
