Hammam Mouassine

The Hammam Mouassine features a massive, ornately carved cedar wood portal, arched and covered in intricate geometric patterns that distinguish it from the plain clay walls surrounding it. Built in the middle of the sixteenth century under the Saadian Sultan Moulay Abdallah al-Ghalib, it remains the largest and oldest operating bathhouse in the city. The Sultan commissioned this complex to serve the residents of the neighborhood, providing them with a space for ritual purification and social gathering that has persisted for nearly five hundred years.
