The Mellah stands out for its high, defensive walls that once separated this Jewish quarter from the rest of the Marrakech medina. Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib established this district in the sixteenth century to house the city's Jewish population under royal protection. When the Spanish Inquisition expelled Jews and Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula, many refugees settled here. They brought skills in gold working and trade, turning these narrow, enclosed alleys into the heart of the city's commerce for generations.
