Bab Agnaou features a massive horseshoe arch carved from blue-gray diorite stone, now weathered to a soft, brownish hue. It served as the formal entrance to the royal kasbah for the Almohad caliphs in the twelfth century. When the Sultan Yaqub al-Mansur commissioned the gate, he ordered the stone brought all the way from the quarries of Sale and Tangier. Even after centuries of exposure, intricate floral carvings and Quranic inscriptions still rim the perimeter of the great stone archway.
