The minaret of the Moulay al-Yazid Mosque rises above the Mechouar Kasba with a band of green ceramic tile work near its top. Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur commissioned this building in the late sixteenth century to serve the royal palace district. In one instance, during the French protectorate, the mosque served as a refuge for Sultan Mohammed the Fifth when he was briefly exiled from the throne. The structure remains an active place of prayer and carries the name of a later Alaouite ruler.
