Bahia Palace

The Bahia Palace spreads across eight hectares with a chaotic, non-linear floor plan that defies traditional Islamic architectural symmetry. Si Moussa, the grand vizier to Sultan Hassan the First, spent fourteen years in the late nineteenth century acquiring surrounding houses to stitch together this labyrinthine residence. He famously prioritized the comfort of his favorite wife, Bahia, whose name means the brilliant or the beautiful. The rooms remain arranged in a sprawling, disconnected layout because the vizier simply bought whatever land became available.
