The heavy, iron-studded cedar doors of the Ferran Meryem mark the entrance to a centuries-old furnace that once powered the neighborhood's public bathhouse. Before the city had modern plumbing, residents brought their buckets to the hammam, where the heat generated here warmed the water and the stone floors. Today, the soot-stained brick archway remains, tucked against the limestone walls of the medina, while the fire that roared within the massive oven for generations finally went cold years ago.
