The facade of the De Bijenkorf department store features a massive, sculptural concrete relief that wraps around the building. Designed by artist Henry Moore, the work consists of eleven separate blocks, creating a heavy, textured presence against the modern glass storefront. The store rose from the ashes of the original building, which was destroyed during the German bombing of Rotterdam in nineteen forty. Marcel Breuer, the architect, prioritized this monumental public art to anchor the new commercial center of the city.
